Abdou Salam Gueye
Biography
Dr. Abdou Salam Gueye is the Emergency Director at the WHO African Regional Office and previously served as the WHO Representative in Mauritania. He holds a medical doctorate and a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Dakar, as well as a PhD in Biomedical Informatics from the University of Utah. A Fulbright Fellow, he spent over a decade with the US CDC, holding key roles such as Country Representative in Benin, Strategic Information Officer in Atlanta, Associate Director for Science in Côte d’Ivoire, and Director of the Global Health Protection Program in DRC. Earlier in his career, Dr. Gueye worked as a Chief Medical Officer in Kolda District, Senegal, an Assistant Professor at the University of Dakar, and a UN peacekeeping medical officer in the DRC. During the West Africa Ebola epidemic, he was appointed US CDC Field Response Lead. Dr. Gueye is the co-founder and editorial board member of the Pan African Medical Journal and founded the Institut Mère Enfant de Kaolack (IMEK). He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and, in 2019, received the US CDC Charles C. Shepard Science Award for outstanding scientific contributions.
