Dr Akramul Islam
Biography
Dr. Islam is a public health and development professional with diversified experience including the academic sector, renowned for his leadership in national and global advocacy. As a Senior Director, he leads BRAC’s Health and Humanitarian Programmes by providing conceptual and technical guidance on both national and international scales. Dr Islam firmly believes in active community participation, always encourages on community approach for reaching TB vulnerable communities and stands as a voice for them in policy discussions. He has been instrumental in crafting innovative models like, "Community-based" and "Public-Private Partnership" approaches to tackle Tuberculosis. He holds the Chair of the South East Asia Regional Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Tuberculosis (SEAR STAG-TB) by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Dr. Islam has contributed more than 50 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and is the author of books “Making Tuberculosis History: Community-based Solution for Millions” and “BRAC’s Journey Towards Safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene”. He also served as a technical consultant of the Union for South East Asia Region from 2009-2010. Moreover, he is an adjunct professor at the James P. Grant School of Public Health of BRAC University.
