Professor Alexandra Calmy
Biography
Alexandra Calmy is a physician trained in internal medicine and infectious diseases. She holds a PhD in clinical research in HIV and AIDS obtained in Sydney, Australia. She is currently a Professor and the Head of the HIV/AIDS Unit at Geneva University Hospitals.
Alexandra Calmy’s research interest is the public health and humanitarian response to HIV and AIDS, specifically the provision of antiretroviral therapy and managing side-effects in resource-limited settings.
In 1996, she worked as a physician with MSF in Cambodia; she has subsequently supported MSF’s HIV and AIDS work for more than 10 years. Since 2001, she has been a member of the WHO working groups on writing and implementing guidelines related to the treatment of people living with HIV in low- and middle-income countries.
She is also Co-Lead of the CSS13 Committee at the Agence Nationale de Recherche sur le SIDA in France, a member of the Scientific Board of the Swiss HIV Study Cohort, of the Federal Commission of Sexual Health and of the National COVID-19 Science Task Force in Switzerland and also serves as a member of the WHO HIVResNet Steering Group.
