Dr. Bruce J. Kirenga is a medical professional specializing in Pulmonary Medicine and Epidemiology. He completed his medical degree (MBChB) and internal medicine training (MMed) at Makerere University. He furthered his clinical and research expertise with a year of advanced training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Yale University, USA. Dr. Kirenga undertook a two-year clinical research fellowship with the University of Amsterdam Royal Tropical Institute. In 2021, Dr. Kirenga was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) of London.
Dr Kirenga has conducted clinical and epidemiological research studies in Tuberculosis, COVID-19, Ebola and mpox and has over 200 publications (https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Bruce-Kirenga/research). He is passionate about the integral role of vaccines in prevention of illnesses, and was appointed a member of the Ugandan National Immunisation Technical Advisory Group (UNITAG). He is also a member of the National Research and Innovation Programme Steering Committee. At the Lung Institute, he created a Vaccines and Epidemics research group which has implemented several vaccine trials including the COVID-19, Ebola and mpox vaccine trials. He also established the TB research group which has implemented several TB projects such as the STREAM trial, PARADIGM TB, OPTIC TB among others.
Recently, he spearheaded the creation of the Interdisciplinary Consortium on Epidemics (ICER) that aims to address the lack of coordinated epidemic research infrastructure in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.
