Biography

Dr Chris Degeling is a public health ethicist and health social scientist with an international reputation for his work on the place of public deliberation in health policymaking in infectious disease control. With more than 20 years’ experience in veterinary practice, in the last 10 years, he has established himself as a leading researcher in the ethics and politics of One Health.

Chris’s research work has focused on establishing and leading multi-disciplinary teams with the goals of reducing health inequities resulting from communicable diseases and improving the quality and authenticity of public engagement in associated and relevant policy processes. His findings have identified practical, sociocultural, and ethical enablers and barriers to effective policy implementation. Particularly how accommodating public values and beliefs is key to the positive and sustainable impacts of using a One Health approach.

He is a Social Science lead for the Australian Partnership for Preparedness Research on Infectious Disease Emergencies (APPRISE) and an advisor and collaborator with leading scientific organisations, Australian State and Federal Health departments, and departments of Primary Industries.
