David Ulaeto
Biography
David Ulaeto obtained his B.Sc. (Biological Sciences, 1984) and Ph.D. (Cancer Research, 1988) from the University of Birmingham, United Kkingdom, followed by post-doctoral training at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis from 1988-1991. He joined Oregon State University as an Assistant Professor of Microbiology from 1992-1995, where he developed a life-long interest in poxvirus biology. In 1995 he returned to the United Kingdom take a position at the Defence Science & Technology Laboratory (Dstl), Porton Down, where he continues as a Principal Scientist. Since 2000 he has been an advisor to the WHO on variola virus research. Since 2009 he has also advised the FAO and WOHA on rinderpest virus post-eradication activities, and in 2012 became a member of the FAO-WOHA Rinderpest Joint Advisory Committee. He is a Fellow of the Society of Biology and former Chairman of the Wessex Branch of the Society. His research area is the study of poxvirus morphogenesis and evolution and he has a strong interest in the eradication of serious viral diseases, and the prevention of their re-emergence; and the control of current and future viral diseases.
