Biography

Board Chair, Global Health Workforce Alliance

David Weakliam is a leader and advocate on global health issues in Ireland. Trained as a medical specialist in General Practice and Public Health Medicine, he has worked since 1988 in global health, including 12 years leading and managing health programmes in Sudan, Liberia, Nepal, Ghana and DRC. On return to Ireland he worked as Health Adviser in Irish Aid from 2003 to 2007. His current role is National Lead for the Global Health Programme in the Health Service Executive, Ireland’s public health service. He has continued as a technical adviser to Irish Aid. He is current Chair of the Board of the European ESTHER Alliance which supports North-South institutional health partnerships, and leads Ireland’s ESTHER programme. He is Chair of the Irish Forum for Global Health, a global health network in Ireland with more than 700 members. He is Chair of Tearfund Ireland, an international development NGO working in Africa and Asia. He holds an academic post as senior lecturer in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
