Dr Christopher Coulter

Biography

Dr Christopher Coulter is an Australian Infectious Diseases Physician and Clinical Microbiologist. He is Director of the Queensland Mycobacterium Reference Laboratory, a WHO Collaborating Centre for Tuberculosis Bacteriology and a Supranational Reference Laboratory. He is also the Medical Advisor TB and Infectious Diseases, Communicable Disease Branch Department of Health Queensland and is a Member and past Chair of the Australian National Tuberculosis Advisory Committee.

In his role, he has contributed to capacity development efforts to countries in the Western Pacific and African Regions. He has also participated in various WHO Guideline Development Groups and technical expert exercises and consultations including evaluation of line probe hybridization assays, Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of medicines used in the treatment of drug-resistant TB and new critical concentrations for second-line treatment agents. His research interest includes the use of next-generation sequencing to understand TB transmission and resistance, the epidemiology of MDR TB, cross border TB control and various clinical aspects of nontuberculous mycobacterial infection. His clinical practice is focused on patients with TB and NTM disease.
