Dr Dimie Ogoina

Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases and Head of Infectious Unit, Bayelsa Medical University, Nigeria

Biography

Professor Ogoina is the head of the Infectious Disease Unit at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri, Bayelsa, and served as case management lead during the mpox and COVID-19 outbreaks in Bayelsa. He also chaired the Subject Matter Experts for the Federal Ministry of Health/U.S. CDC Community of Practice of COVID-19 case managers in Nigeria.

His research interests include HIV/AIDS, health-care-associated infections, infection prevention and control, antimicrobial resistance, and epidemic-prone infectious diseases. He is also interested in clinical governance and quality improvement.

In October 2024, Professor Ogoina was appointed Vice Chancellor of Bayelsa Medical University, Nigeria, following his tenure as Chief Medical Director of the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Throughout his career, he has held significant academic and administrative roles, including Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, and Acting Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Niger Delta University. He also served as Chair of the Bayelsa Health Summit, Deputy Chair of the Nigeria Health Research Committee, and Chair of the Oloibiri Health Project – a strategic partnership between SPDC and the Bayelsa State Government aimed at enhancing health services in the region. He has a keen interest in medical education, infectious diseases practice, and research.

Professor Ogoina currently serves as a National Principal Investigator or Co-investigator for various planned and ongoing research projects on various infectious diseases, including the REVIVE trial - HIV/AIDS (Population Health Research Institute, Canada); Epidemiological and Clinical Investigation of Mpox in Nigeria (UKPHRST & LSHTM); MOSA - Mpox in Africa Study (European Commission); SMART trial - Mpox (McMaster University, Canada);and Mpox - GECIVO Africa (Wellcome Trust), among others. He also serves as Co-Chair of the Trial Steering Committee of the Unity Trial - Mpox (European Commission).

Professor Ogoina’s expertise and leadership extend beyond academia into global health policy and advisory roles. He currently serves as the President of the Nigerian Infectious Diseases Society (NIDS), where he has led efforts to strengthen research, education, and policy in infectious diseases across Nigeria.

Professor Ogoina has authored over 98 scientific articles in high-impact journals such as The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine, and Clinical Infectious Diseases. He has presented over 43 conference papers and delivered 47 guest lectures both locally and internationally.

Prof Ogoina is an advocate for digital innovation in healthcare and education, leveraging his expertise in app development, animation, and digital platforms to enhance health-care delivery and public health education. He has developed and published several apps and produced various animated medical and non-medical videos available on various digital platforms. He initiated the ‘Dimie (D)-LENS Mentorship Series,’ a digital platform offering mentorship, guidance, and career development to young health-care professionals and students.

Prof Dimie Ogoina obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria, where he received two prestigious awards: the Professor Bandipo's Prize for the overall best graduating doctor in Community Medicine and the Best Continuous Assessment in Community Medicine. After completing his undergraduate medical education, he pursued a residency training program specializing in infectious diseases and immunology. During this time, he was awarded the Ayo Iyun Prize for being the overall best Part 1 Candidate in West Africa's Faculty of Internal Medicine by the West African College of Physicians.

Prof Ogoina completed his residency training and received a Fellowship in Infectious Diseases and Immunology from both the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FMCP). In 2015, he was elected Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and, in 2022, Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (FIDSA).

Prof Ogoina served on the IHR Emergency Committee on the multi-country outbreak of mpox.
