Biography

Prof. Dr. Gülay Korukluoğlu graduated from Ankara University School of Medicine in 1989. He completed the microbiology specialization program between 1992-1995 and started to work as a microbiologist at the National Virology Laboratory of the General Directorate of Public Health in Türkiye. She studied virology at Osaka University between 1997-98 and at the University of Michigan between 2003-04. She also worked as the representative of Turkey National Virology Reference Laboratory within the scope of WHO Measles Elimination program in CDC/Atlanta/USA in 2004 and PHE/London/England in 2005. Between 2008 and 2022, she was the director of the same laboratory. Dr.Korukluoğlu has played a very important role in the establishment and development of laboratory-based surveillance systems for viral-based infectious diseases that are closely related to public health in Turkey. She was leading the establishment and maintenance of the World Health Organization's National Reference Laboratories in Türkiye for the eradication/elimination of vaccine-preventable childhood diseases such as measles and polio. In addition, she has established the ILI/SARI Surveillance Laboratory Network within the scope of World Health Organization surveillance systems. As the National Virology Reference Laboratory, she pioneered the establishment, development and dissemination of diagnostic capacity for some other endemic viral infections such as CCHF, WNV and Hantavirus in Turkey. Recently, she was the coordinator of laboratories across the country during the COVID 19 epidemic. Dr.Korukluoğlu is currently working as a professor at the Department of Microbiology of Health Sciences University / Ankara City Hospital.
