Dr Khalide Azam

Biography

Dr Azam is a Senior Laboratory Specialist based at East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC) Secretariat in Arusha, Tanzania where he contributes to strengthening regional capacity for disease surveillance, diagnostics and management of TB and occupational lung diseases.

Dr Azam holds a PhD in Medical Research – International Health from the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich, Germany.

He started his career in 2008 at Mozambique’s National TB Reference Laboratory (NTRL) carrying out technical, scientific and programmatic activities as a laboratory scientist and manager of the NTRL for nine years. His training and experience in the NTRL and private sector in Mozambique provided him with rich knowledge of TB diagnosis and treatment monitoring, drug resistance TB, TB/HIV co-infection, quality management system, biosafety and biosecurity as well as excellent command of planning, monitoring and evaluation, and coordination of research projects. Dr Azam’s interest in research focuses on TB diagnostics, drug resistance and (molecular) biomarkers to monitor treatment outcomes. He was also involved in the coordination of the TB drug resistance surveillance system and played an important role in the NTRL accreditation process using the ISO 15189 standards. 

Since 2019 he is a Core Group Member of the Global Laboratory Initiative.
