Medical Doctor, Universidad Central del Ecuador 1978, Endocrinologist, Colegio Medico de Pichincha, Federación Médica del Ecuador 1984, PhD in Pharmacology, Universidad de Sao Paulo, Brazil 1987. Specialist in Clinic Hypertension by the Universidad de Guadalajara, Mexico, and the Latin America Society of Hypertension (LASH), 2004. Currently, is the Research Director and Director of the Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes Clinic in the Fundación Oftalmólogica de Santander (FOSCAL), Professor of the Medical School, Universidad de Santander (UDES), and Universidad Autonoma de Bucaramanga (UNAB) in Bucaramanga, Colombia, and Visiting Professor of the Eugenio Espejo Medical School of the Universidad UTE, Quito, Ecuador. Member of the Lancet Commission on Hypertension and the National Lider in Colombia of the PURE study. Was President of the LASH 2014- 2017. By his contributions to the study of epidemiology, treatment and control of hypertension received the Alberto Zanchetti Award of the LASH in 2017, and the Award of Honorary Member of the European Society of Hypertension in 2018 by the extraordinary contributions to research in hypertension. Have published more than 200 articles in hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors, with 44 articles in the 3 top medical journals: New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet and JAMA.
