Professor Phillip Alviola
Biography
Professor Phillip Alviola is currently an Associate Professor at the University of the Philippines Los Banos. He has been a wildlife biologist for 24 years, specializing in Mammalian Ecology and Taxonomy, Cave Bats Ecology, Conservation Biology, and Bat Zoonotics.
He has been involved in bat zoonotic research since 2007. He has discovered several novel virus genotypes such as gammaherpes, coronaviruses, and hantaviruses, as well as discovered the first serologic evidence of Ebola Reston Virus on bats. His current research on viruses from bats involves (1) developing a simulation model for prediction of bat-derived coronavirus outbreak in humans, and (2) conducting biosurveillance on fruit bat populations to determine presence of viral spill-overs to intermediate and human hosts.
