Dr Jonathan M. Schapiro

Biography

Dr Schapiro currently runs the HIV/AIDS clinic at the Israeli Ministry of Health National Hemophilia Center at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv, and continues to be active in postgraduate medical educational programs in both resource rich and limited settings. More recently he has been exploring improving global clinician learning utilizing new technologies.

His clinical focus is working with people living with HIV with long-standing infection and limited treatment options. Research interests include resistance and cross-resistance between drugs, associations between resistance and pharmacology, and development of new antiretroviral agents with improved resistance, tolerability, and pharmacological characteristics.

Dr Schapiro completed a Fellowship in Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine focusing on antiviral drug development at the Stanford Centre for AIDS Research. He has served as a member and advisor of numerous US and international expert panels and working groups including the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Antiviral Drugs Advisory Committee, WHO HIV Drug Resistance Network Steering Group, and the IAS-USA Drug Resistance Group. His publications have appeared in leading medical journals and remain focused on HIV resistance. He continues his longstanding work with the Stanford HIV Drug Resistance Database.
