Dr Lori Newman
Biography
Dr Lori Newman is the Deputy Director for STI and Gynecology in the Women’s Health Innovations team of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. She is a board-certified family physician with over 25 years of experience in addressing sexually transmitted infections (STI) and women’s health in the US and globally.
She earned an undergraduate degree in Geography from Dartmouth College, completed a Fulbright Scholarship in the Philippines, earned a medical degree from the University of California San Francisco, and completed residency in Family Medicine at the University of Washington.
She started her medical career as a provincial public health advisor in central Mozambique, after which she joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an Epidemic Intelligence Service and US Public Health Service officer. While with CDC, she spent 6 years seconded to WHO Department of Reproductive Health and Research in Switzerland and 3 years with the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. From 2018 through 2023 she was the medical officer for the Enteric and STI Branch in the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). She works part-time as a family physician at a community health center in Washington, D.C.
