Biography

Assistant professor (virology), institutional biosafety and biosecurity officer, Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control & Research (IEDCR) & National Influenza Centre (NIC), Bangladesh

Dr Manjur Hossain Khan Jony is a medical graduate and virologist, who has been working at the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR)/National Influenza Centre (NIC) in Bangladesh since December 2012. He served as the institutional biosafety and biosecurity officer from 2012 to 2016 and from 2019 to the present. Dr Jony has been involved in various laboratory activities, including national influenza surveillance, rotavirus surveillance and respiratory event-based surveillance conducted by the IEDCR. He currently oversees the genomic laboratory, the cell culture laboratory (BSL III), the molecular laboratory (BSL II) and the serology and immunology laboratory (BSL II) at IEDCR. Dr Jony has contributed to developing several laboratory standard operating procedures and guidelines, including those for biosafety and biosecurity in Bangladesh. He was a reviewer of the Quick Laboratory Biosafety and Biosecurity Manual organized by WHO-SEARO. Since 2013, he has been a national trainer in infection prevention and control, laboratory biosafety and biosecurity. He also serves as a technical assessor for the Bangladesh Accreditation Board.
