Professor Manuela Barreto

Biography

Manuela Barreto was born in Portugal, started her career in the Netherlands, where she did her PhD, and now lives in the United Kingdom. She is an expert on social stigma and its impact on those who are stigmatized, especially their identity and social relationships. Her work on loneliness has been focused on demonstrating the role of marginalization processes, at the interpersonal and structural levels, as well as evidencing loneliness inequalities across a range of social groups. Manuela sees loneliness as a social justice issue and is keen to contribute to developing ways to prevent and address loneliness that reduce inequalities.
