Dr Nicholas Banatvala

Head of Secretariat, UN Interagency Task Force on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs).

Biography

Currently, the Head of the Secretariat for the UN Interagency Task Force on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs). Nick also leads a range of innovative training and capacity building initiatives for senior policy makers in low- and middle-income countries in the area of NCDs

Prior to this, Nick was Head of Global Affairs, Department of Health, England where among other responsibilities he led the development and implementation of the UK Government's first-ever global health strategy a cross-government strategy for working with WHO.

Before that, he headed up the UK Department for International Development’s work on global health partnerships and initiatives and scaling up health services during which time he led the health inputs for the 2005 G8 Gleneagles communiqué. He has represented the UK on a number of international initiatives, including the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria and Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation.

Nick has also worked for DFID on a range of health programmes in Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Middle East. Nick has experience of the NGO sector, working for several years with the British aid agency, Merlin on development and humanitarian programmes.

Nick trained in paediatrics and infectious diseases before doing public health and epidemiologic research in the UK and at CDC, Atlanta. Nick has held senior posts in UK public health - leading a range of initiatives on heart disease, cancer, diabetes and clinical governance.

Nick has sat on a range of government, NGO and academic boards, as well as national and international committees. He has undertaken consultancies for a number of agencies including the World Bank. Nick holds a Chair at Manchester University and a senior lectureship at Imperial College, London.
