Professor Nuno Faria

Biography

Prof Nuno Rodrigues Faria is a Professor in Virus Genomic Epidemiology at the MRC Global Infectious Disease Analysis (GIDA) unit, School of Public Health, Imperial College London, where he leads the Pathogen Genomic Epidemiology Unit. The MRC GIDA serves as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Infectious Disease Modelling. At the School of Public Health, Prof Faria is responsible for the MSc Epidemiology program. He also holds a visiting professorship at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, University of São Paulo, Brazil. 

Prof Faria earned his doctorate from the Rega Institute, KU Leuven, Belgium. He has held academic positions as a Lecturer in Infectious Disease Control, a Wellcome Trust Sir Henry Dale Fellow, and an Associate Professor at the University of Oxford. Additionally, he has served as a visiting professor at the Institute Evandro Chagas, Ministry of Health, Brazil. 

Prof Faria has co-authored more than 150 scientific papers, which have been cited over 25,000 times, including publications in Science, Nature, The Lancet, and PNAS. He contributes as an expert on several national and international panels, including the WHO Technical Advisory Group of the Global Arbovirus Initiative and the WHO R&D Blueprint Zika Taskforce. He has worked on the WHO Eliminating Yellow Fever Epidemics (EYE) strategy and contributed to the development of the first WHO guide on implementing genomic sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 for maximum public health impact.
