Kathleen Neuzil
Biography
Dr. Neuzil is a former Director, Fogarty International Center, and Associate Director for International Research at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md. She received her BS in zoology from the University of Maryland, College Park, her MD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and her MPH from Vanderbilt University. She received her training in internal medicine and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Neuzil has over two decades of experience in infectious diseases and vaccine science, policy and introduction. Throughout her career, she has conducted clinical and epidemiologic studies on vaccine-preventable diseases, with an emphasis on viral infections and vaccines – including influenza, rotavirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), Japanese encephalitis virus and Human Papillomavirus (HPV). From 2015-2024, she led the Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where her team was involved in the full range of vaccine development. From 2005-2015, Dr. Neuzil led programs and teams at PATH, a global health non-profit, and provided strategic leadership, direction, and technical guidance for vaccine projects that spanned from vaccine development to field implementation, and included work on maternal immunization.
Dr. Neuzil has extensive experience in domestic and international policy, including membership on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and the Pandemic Influenza Task Force for the Infectious Disease Society of America. Dr. Neuzil has previously worked with the World Health Organization as a technical advisor on influenza and diarrheal diseases, as a member of the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts rotavirus vaccine working group, and member of the Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety working group on the safety of vaccines in pregnancy. She has contributed more than 330 scientific papers on vaccines and infectious diseases. She is a member of the prestigious US National Academy of Medicine.
