Raúl De Sousa
Biography
Raúl Sousa’s expertise is vision science, optometry, optics, public eye health, and
eyecare policies definition and provision. He is qualified in pre-Bologna BSc, four
years one semester, in Applied Physics-Optics with a speciality in Optometry and an MSc
in Advanced Optometry. He has been practising clinical optometry for more than 27 years,
advocate for universal eyecare, science educator and researcher. Mr Sousa is
currently a consultant in eye care and vision products for UNICEF, and a member of the
expert panel in medical devices in ophthalmology of the European Medicines
Agency, previously the European Commission. He is an expert in health technologies in
ophthalmology in the International and National Standards Organization, and a member
of the Collaborators Network of the Global Burden Disease, IHME. He co-authored
peer-reviewed articles, books, positions and public contributions on eye care access
and provision, epidemiology, public eye health, optometric regulation, and
professional practice.
