Professor Samira Abdelrahman

Professor of Community Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Gezira (FMUG), Sudan

Biography

Professor Abdelrahman is a recognized academic leader. She worked as the head of the Community Medicine department at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Gezira (2004–2008) where she lead more effective partnership with the Ministry of Health programmes and health related sectors. This partnership resulted in more relevance of the faculty curricula and appropriateness of students’ community medicine training, in addition to establishing postgraduate programmes in Community Medicine.

Professor Abdelrahman has demonstrated a distinguished career including serving as the Dean of the Blue Nile National Institute for Communicable Diseases (BNNICD) (2010–2018) where she lead the expansion of the institute’s research projects and degree programmes, benefiting from unique partnerships with WHO, UN agencies and reputable institutions worldwide. She has vast experience in leading national projects including the project for development of gender sensitive core competencies of Sudanese university professionals on HIV & AIDS (2009–2010); the status of midwifery pre-service education in Sudan (2012); a national immunization coverage survey (2015); the national HIV capacity development project for NGOs, AIDS programme and related sectors (2010–2019); and work with a team of consultants to evaluate the HIV response in Sudan (2016). She worked with WHO (2012) to develop a “Teachers’ guide on Malaria Case Management” in Sudanese Medical Schools, and “Malaria Curriculum for Health Institutions (medicine, nursing, laboratory sciences and public health)” in Somali zones (2013). Professor Abdelrahman lead and coordinated the Prospective Country Evaluation conducted by the Global Fund’s Technical Evaluation Reference Group (TERG) in Sudan (2017–2021). During her Deanship of the Scientific Research University of Gezira, she developed a system for the governance and management of staff and students’ research and innovations. She graduated as medical doctor from the University of Khartoum, and earned a High Diploma in Public Health and a Master’s degree in Health Education from the University of Gezira, and MD (Community Medicine) from the Sudanese Board for Medical Specializations.
