Biography

Scott M. Hammer is Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Adult Division of Infectious Diseases at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He is a clinical virologist with a longstanding interest in unravelling the mysteries of persistent viral infections, the symptoms (such as fatigue) and diseases they cause and defining the best ways to treat and prevent them.

His major investigative interest has been the treatment and prevention of HIV disease. He serves as Principal Investigator of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)-sponsored Columbia Collaborative HIV/AIDS Clinical Trials Unit and has been a longstanding investigator in the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) and the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN), chairing several major clinical trials.

Scott M. Hammer has previously served as a member of the International AIDS Society’s Governing Council, Chair of the International AIDS Society-USA’s Antiretroviral Guidelines Panel and Vice Chair of the WHO Strategic and Technical Advisory Committee on HIV and Viral Hepatitis. He chaired the Guidelines Development Group for the WHO antiretroviral drug guidelines development group in 2002, 2003 and 2006 and co-chaired the WHO HIVResNet and its Steering Group .

In his role as Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, he is dedicated to optimizing care for people with all forms of infectious diseases, to fellow and faculty growth and to developing state-of-the-art infection surveillance at the institutional and regional levels to improve and protect public health.
