Biography

Dr Sungchol Kim has been serving as the Unit Head for Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine Unit under the Integrated Health Services Department at WHO Headquarters in Geneva since February 2023. In this capacity, he oversees WHO’s global efforts to harness the potential contribution of traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine to integrated health services, Universal Health Coverage, and the achievement of health-related Sustainable Development Goals. 

Prior to joining WHO Headquarters, Dr Kim was the Regional Advisor for Traditional Medicine at the WHO Regional Office for South-East Asia in New Delhi from 2013 to 2023, where he worked closely with member states to strengthen traditional medicine systems across the region. From 2003 to 2009, he served as a National Professional Officer at the WHO Country Office, focusing on public health initiatives at the national level. Prior to his work with WHO, he spent 10 years at the National Academy of Traditional Medicine Science.   

Dr Kim’s expertise spans traditional medicine research, clinical practice, policy and regulatory system development, and the integration of traditional medicine into health service delivery. His experience also includes monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of traditional medicine systems, as well as the development of integrative clinical practice guidelines. 

Dr Kim holds a doctoral degree in biomedicine and traditional Chinese medicine, along with a master’s degree in public health.
