Prof Wenjie Tan
Biography
Dr Wenjie Tan received his medical degree from Beijing Medical University in 1989 and completed his Ph.D. in 1998 at the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine (CAPM), where he specialized in immunology and virology, with a focus on picornaviruses and hepatitis viruses. From 1998 to 2004, he conducted research in virology and gene therapy in the United States, working at the University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In 2005, he joined the National Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention (NIVDCP), Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as a principal investigator. Since 2008, he has served as Chief and Professor at the Biotechnology Centre for Viral Disease Emergency, China CDC.
Dr Tan’s research focuses on the detection, surveillance, and development of countermeasures against emerging viral diseases, including mpox and COVID-19. In recognition of his contributions to the COVID-19 response, he was awarded the Second National Innovation Award in 2020 and the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress from the Beijing Municipal Government in 2022. He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications and holds more than 10 patents.
