Highlights
Dhaka, Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, the event was launched in Chattogram, in the presence of Mayor of Chattogran City, health officials from all over the country and health partners. Addressing the event, Dr Bardan Rana Jung, WHO representative to Bangladesh appreciated the intensive efforts throughout the country for achieving a high level of immunization.

There are good lessons that the world can learn from the immunization practices being done in Bangladesh. The country has set the goal of Measles and Rubella elimination by 2020 which means a 95 percent MR immunization. However, the current percentage is only at 84. To achieve this target, more effort and innovative thinking is required for getting the vaccines to those who traditionally are very difficult to reach in both rural and urban areas.”

WHO has been supporting Government of Bangladesh in implementing and expanding immunization programs since 1972. In 1979, WHO assisted the Government for starting Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), an initiative that led to saving millions of lives.

“I am confident Bangladesh can continue to maintain the high level of immunization and I congratulate all health workers for their continuing efforts against vaccine preventable diseases.” added Dr Rana.

WHO remains committed to supporting the Government of Bangladesh in achieving the highest level of immunization, as an essential pillar for Universal Health Coverage.
