The WHO AWaRe antibiotic book: Providing Guidance on Optimal Use and Informing Policy

The World Health Organization is pleased to invite you to the official launch of the WHO AWaRe antibiotic book. This publication provides key guidance related to the prescribing and use of the antibiotics on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines (EML) for the empiric treatment of over 30 common infections in adults and children. The publication is based on the EML and WHO's AWaRe (Access. Watch, Reserve) framework for antibiotics and includes information on epidemiology, common causative pathogens, diagnostic strategies and the impact of antimicrobial resistance on antibiotic selection. The publication is accompanied by infographics for individual infectious syndromes intended to be a quick-reference, user-friendly and portable resource for clinicians at the point of care.

This meeting will see the participation of several international leaders in the area of antimicrobial resistance and WHO senior managers.

Launch of the Strategy to respond to Antimalarial drug Resistance (STAR) in Africa

This session will introduce the Strategy to respond to Antimalarial drug Resistance in Africa. Antimalarial drug resistance poses a serious threat to achieving further gains in the fight against malaria in Africa. The strategy is a technical and advocacy document, grounded in the best available evidence to date and aimed at minimizing the threat and impact of antimalarial drug resistance of Plasmodium falciparum parasites in Africa. The strategy builds on lessons learned from past global plans and complements existing strategies, including broader efforts to respond to antimicrobial resistance.

WHO Infection Prevention and Control Global Webinar

Back to the future: inspiring the next generation on hand hygiene

This WHO global webinar will be held in the context of the WAAW 2022 and is aimed at highlighting the importance of hand hygiene to reduce infection and AMR in health care settings.

It will also be an exceptional moment to celebrate the career of Professor Didier Pittet whose work and leadership have been revolutionary and paramount in hand hygiene improvement worldwide. Furthermore, other experts who contributed to the research, development and implementation of innovative strategies for hand hygiene improvement will be part of a panel discussion. The objectives are to review innovative approaches that changed the history of hand hygiene promotion; to understand adaptation and adoption of evidence-based strategies for hand hygiene improvement worldwide; and to highlight the example of an exceptional global leader and inspire the next generation of leaders on hand hygiene.

The webinar will be held in English, with simultaneous interpretation available in: Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, Russian, French.

Catalyzing a global movement for action against AMR

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), known as the Quadripartite are pleased to invite you to the official launch of the Antimicrobial Resistance Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Platform.

AMR is a global, growing threat to our public health, agrifood and ecosystems. Addressing it through a coordinated, multi-sectoral One Health approach is a shared responsibility as it affects everyone. Partnerships and cross-sectoral collaborations involving public and private actors at global, regional, and national levels are required if we are to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The AMR Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Platform is an international and inclusive multi-stakeholder venue that aims to bring together diverse voices across the human, animal, plant and environment sectors to preserve antimicrobials in common cause and ensure their responsible use.

The Platform aims to create a global movement for change on AMR, raise awareness of the role everyone should play in tackling AMR, and highlight the importance of a collaborative One Health approach in addressing AMR issues.

The launch of the Platform will take the form of a virtual facilitated interactive event. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. Join us for the official launch of the Platform and become part of the global multi-stakeholder dialogue and action against AMR.

One Health Integrated Antimicrobial Stewardship Approach

This webinar will discuss how all sectors can encourage the prudent use of antimicrobials and to strengthen preventive measures addressing AMR, working together collaboratively through a One Health approach. This will deepen the understanding of the opportunities for implementing integrated AMS activities. This is an open webinar and target audiences include One Health Stakeholders, Clinicians, pharmacists, infectious disease physicians, national AMR committee members, and other health care professionals, policy makers, experts in charge of national antibiotic policies, External Development Partners and WHO Staff.

Global AMR Youth Summit 2022

17- 19 November, All Day, World Health Students’ Alliance

This youth-led summit aims to empower healthcare students all around the world while taking into consideration regional perspectives and different regional needs for AMR. The multi-day event is organized by the World Health Students Alliance (WHSA) including International Association of Dental Students (IADS), International Federation of Medical Students’ Association (IFMSA), International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation (IPSF) and International Veterinary Students’ Association (IVSA) representing dentistry, medical, pharmaceutical, and veterinary students worldwide respectively. The 2022 summit running title is: “Antimicrobial Resistance: Our fight; Our life”.

Infections in Surgery global webinar

This two-day global webinar with more than 100 speakers will discuss the main aspects of prevention and management of infections across the surgical pathway. It aims to increase awareness of AMR and to encourage a comprehensive approach to infections in healthcare. 

WAAW 2022 High-level Kick-off Event

21 November, 11:00 – 15:30 CET, Africa Regional Quadripartite (FAO, UNEP, WHO, WOAH), the African Union and the Republic of Senegal

The Ministers of the different sectors (Human Health, Animal Health, Environment) joined by the Regional Directors of the Quadripartite and the Director of the Africa Union agencies (ACDC, AU-IBAR) to provide official opening remarks and respond to questions related to AMR as part of a high-level panel discussion.

Surveillance of acquired HIV resistance to dolutegravir among people receiving dolutegravir-based ART with unsuppressed viral load

The webinar will launch WHO’s new method of sentinel surveillance of acquired HIV drug resistance in people receiving dolutegravir-containing antiretroviral therapy (ART). In addition, the webinar will update attendees on 1) The global transition to dolutegravir-based ART; 2) The prevalence of dolutegravir resistance in low- and middle-income countries; 3) Dolutegravir drug resistance in persons diagnosed with HIV after exposure to long-acting injectable cabotegravir for pre-exposure prophylaxis; and 4) The predicted effects of introduction of long-acting injectable cabotegravir pre-exposure prophylaxis in sub-Saharan Africa. The session will include discussion by an expert panel.

Multi-Sectoral Approaches to Responsible Access: Working Together to Fight AMR

This webinar will discuss some key collaborative approaches that are helping to achieve responsible access to antimicrobials. Panelists will address promising new strategies for addressing access in low- and middle-income countries, recommendations from a new report on ensuring a sustainable supply of antimicrobials, and the role of diagnostics in the appropriate use of antibiotics. The AMR Industry Alliance will also announce the winner of its 2022 Stewardship Prize, which aims to reward a best practice in responsible access through coordinated, proven and implementable stewardship practice and protocols.

Enhancing antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention for the control of AMR

Putting children first – Towards a better outcome for children and newborns with drug-resistant infections

Neonatal sepsis is a leading killer of babies that is worsening due to antibiotic resistance. There is an urgent need to develop novel antibiotic treatments to keep pace with rising rates of resistance and to ensure appropriate access and stewardship to these treatments around the world. Success Initiatives on AMR advancing funding for AMR control: spotlight on Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF)

Sustainable access for existing antibiotics: Focus on Market Challenges

The current state of play in providing access to antibiotics is challenging and uncertain for the off patent/generic market in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). There are many ways to improve access appropriately and sustainably in LMICs, but these are not being widely used. Collaboration between stakeholders is key and market challenges must be addressed – chronic issues in access to antibiotics and antifungals in LMICs cannot be overlooked any longer. The panelists will discuss on identifying the right public health partners, harmonizing registration across regions, defining local demand to introduce generic medicines, and supporting local manufacturing and technology transfers in LMICs.

Vaccines and Diagnostic Testing: Power Tools for the AMR Work Ahead

This session seeks to provide a better understanding of the environmental dimensions on AMR, promote the role of the environment ministries and the environmental protection agencies in mitigating the spread of AMR. It will also explore funding sources, innovation and capacity building opportunities that can be leveraged to address AMR in the environment.

The Sultanate of Oman is hosting the 3rd High-level Ministerial Conference on AMR in Muscat, Oman on 24 and 25 November 2022 to accelerate tackling AMR at the national, regional, and global levels and to enhance international cooperation. It will build on the success of the two previous High-level Ministerial Conferences held in the Netherlands in 2014 and 2019. The theme of the conference is “The AMR Pandemic: From Policy to One Health Action”. High-level participation will include ministers of health, agriculture, animal health, the environment, and finance, as well as policymakers, key global experts, and representatives from the private sector, civil society, research institutions, and multilateral organizations. The conference will be conducted through keynote speeches, case studies to demonstrate best practices, and interactive discussions between participants.

 

AMR in aquaculture, a concern for food safety, the environment and aquatic animal health
