Disease Outbreak Reported

The Ministry of Health of Armenia has offcially informed WHO of an outbreak of cholera. A village, around 60 km from Yerevan, is affected by cholera and as of 6 September a total of 25 cases had been reported. There is no information on the number of deaths. Cholera is confirmed by laboratory analysis as V. cholerae El Tor. WHO is in close contact with the Ministry of Health which is taking measures to control the disease and its further spread, together with other agencies (e.g. the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies).
