Disease Outbreak Reported
As of 15 March 2001, WHO has reported a total of 436 suspected cases, including 11 deaths in Nyanje area, Petauke District, Eastern Province. Laboratory investigations confirm Yersinia pestis. The existence of bubonic plague in humans was preceded by a fall in the rodent population in the area. Patients were treated with specific antibiotic therapy.
A team of epidemiologists and bacteriologists were sent to investigate, provide technical support and supplies. Health education messages on the prevention of the disease were distributed in the affected area and surveillance intensified.
