Disease Outbreak Reported

Since 13 October 2001, 49 cases and 6 deaths have been reported to WHO in Hargersa town (estimated population: 300-400 000).  Neisseria meningitidis  serogroup A has been laboratory confirmed.  The following measures have been taken to control the outbreak: surveillance through 19 health facilities, distribution of surveillance and case management guidelines and activation of the local crisis committee.  The local health authority, WHO, UNICEF and nongovernmental organizations in the area are monitoring the situation.
