HIV remains a major public health issue. With more than 2 million people affected, the European Region has the fastest growing HIV epidemic of all the 6 WHO Regions. While in some parts of the Region transmission has been almost completely stopped, in other Member States rates of infection are unacceptably high and growing.
On 1 December WHO joins partners to mark World AIDS Day 2023, under the theme “Let communities lead”.
WHO is calling on global leaders and citizens alike to take action in three ways.
- “Nothing about us without us” – engage community leadership in all HIV plans and programmes.
- “Not ending AIDS is more expensive than ending it” – fully fund sustainable community leadership.
- “Remove laws that harm, create laws that empower” – support civil society with robust regulation.
