Report of the Indonesia Polio outbreak response assessment – July 2023

Overview
In November 2022, the Indonesian government reported a polio outbreak in Aceh Province, linked to circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type two (cVDPV2). In response, the Ministry of Health and WHO Indonesia bolstered surveillance and routine immunization, and successfully administered two rounds of nOPV2 Supplementary Immunization Activities (SIAs) across three provinces—Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Java—covering 6,309,127 in the first round and 6,106,961 in the second round. To assess the current situation of the outbreak, WHO, UNICEF, and GPEI partnership conducted an outbreak response assessment (OBRA) through desk reviews and field visits. Overall, the risk of continued circulation is declining, and the outbreak response was timely and effective. It is critical that the national program remain vigilant and flexible and be prepared for further rounds if more virus is detected.
