Americas Region (AMRO/PAHO)

The Americas region has emphasized the use of a comprehensive theory of change at the regional level in order to undertake a systematic approach across countries in the Special Initiative in the region. Further to the key achievements highlighted below, noteworthy activities undertaken in 2023 were two AMRO/PAHO cross-regional meetings: one focused on the development of local-level social determinants and health equity assessments and monitoring systems, the other on intersectoral action for health equity. In 2024, work was initiated to address the monitoring of intersectoral action to enhance management capacities.

The Country Pathfinders of Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Peru have proceeded with local area-based work to develop and implement strategies that use elements of redesigning Primary Health Care as an entry point  to address the social determinants of health equity, as well as alignment of social development and health priorities.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed and magnified health inequities, particularly the informal work sector. As such, the regional office has developed a partnership with the regional domestic workers association, CONLACTRAHO. “Voices for health equity” video case studies have been developed to raise awareness of the experiences of disadvantaged populations.
