POPS for injection safety

Hundreds of thousands of people get infected every year through unsafe injection practices. The WHO multimodal injection safety strategy encourages engagement of multiple stakeholders in order to improve the safety of injection practices.
POPS Injection Safety has provided a unique opportunity to look beyond the regular stakeholders and advocates, to work with ‘non-state actors’ where appropriate. It followed the successful model of POPS Hand Hygiene and comprised industry representatives whose businesses, as well as corporate social responsibilities, focus on supporting the global agenda of preventing harm resulting from unsafe health care practices.
The aim of the POPS Injection Safety Initiative is to develop and maintain a protected web-based platform to allow interactions between private sector/industry stakeholders, such as companies that develop, manufacture and/or distribute safety-engineered injection devices or components thereof, and WHO. The purpose is to establish a coherent means of communicating and sharing information, in line with WHO recommendations, as well as through projects to enhance the availability and accessibility of safe injection products across the whole world.
The first scoping meeting of POPS Injection Safety was held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 14-15 September 2016.
POPS Injection Safety was formally launched on 12 May 2017 in Geneva during the 3rd Global Forum on Medical Devices. The participants of the meeting included WHO Headquarter and Country Offices staff, industry representatives, injection safety experts and representatives of patient associations.
