Background
Tuberculosis (TB) disease has a significant influence in the context of advanced HIV disease (AHD), being among the greatest causes of mortality in people living with HIV. According to the WHO Global Tuberculosis Report in 2022, an estimated 187 000 (158 000–218 000) people died from HIV-associated TB.
This underscores the urgent need to address TB in the context of advanced HIV disease which includes; screening, diagnosis, prevention, and rapid linkage to treatment for TB disease to reduce the morbidity and mortality, especially in low-resource, high-disease burden regions of the world. WHO also recommends that people with advanced HIV disease should receive a package of care interventions that also includes screening, diagnosis and preventive therapy for TB, among other key interventions. For further details on the WHO–recommended package of care, please download the Consolidated guidelines on HIV prevention, testing, treatment, service delivery and monitoring: recommendations for a public health approach.
Thus, a better understanding of the current guidance, key clinical issues, and developments in research on TB/HIV is important for healthcare workers, community workers as well as representatives of civil society to promote adoption of preferred practices and international guidelines.
This virtual learning series will consist of several presentations on topics related to key TB molecular diagnostics, emerging research on diagnostics for TB in advanced HIV disease, pathogenesis and treatment clinical trials, clinical experiences from countries, as well as what the future holds for management of HIV-associated TB in AHD.
WHO TRACK series
WHO “TRACK” Initiative (Technical Resources for Advanced HIV Capacity and Knowledge) is a digital platform and series of webinars to enable and promote the sharing of knowledge and best practices to promote high quality care for people with advanced HIV disease. This digital learning series has a specific focus on the WHO AFRO region but remains relevant for other WHO regions.
