Launch: WHO Global research agenda on health, migration and displacement

30 October 2023 13:00 – 14:30 CET

Strengthening research and translating research priorities into policy and practice

On 30 October 2023, the WHO Department of Health and Migration will launch the “Global research agenda on health, migration and displacement.” The launch event will unveil the research priorities identified and present the critical implementation steps for national, regional and global actors.

Research plays a crucial role in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognize migration as a driver and enabler of sustainable development. Yet globally, a lack of comprehensive, high-quality, and contextualized research on the health of migrants, refugees, and other displaced populations hampers the ability of health systems to adapt and respond to the health needs and rights of these populations, as well as hinders the development of inclusive policies and programmes, challenging global health and jeopardizing the sustainable development goals.

To bridge this knowledge gap the WHO Department of Health and Migration, working closely with the WHO Science Division and Research for Health Department, convened over 180 stakeholders across all regions in 2022 and 2023 to identify global research priorities and create a joint global roadmap for future research in this field, resulting in the first WHO Global research agenda on health, migration and displacement. The priority research topics identified are relevant to all areas of global public health and global policy development, and can be applied to varying geographical regions and migration contexts.

The framework of the global research agenda will promote more engagement in knowledge generation at global, regional and local level and offers the opportunity to advance this critical health agenda, providing evidence-informed, sustainable and migration- and displacement- sensitive solutions to global public health challenges.

The launch webinar will discuss how the global research agenda will lay the foundation for regional and national research agendas and improve evidence-informed policy-making while enhancing multi-stakeholder collaboration and inter-regional knowledge sharing to advance the health of refugees and migrants.
