A Timeline of WHO’s response to COVID-19 in the Western Pacific

18 May 2020

Since 31 December 2019 WHO has been attentively watching and responding to the developments of COVID-19 around the world. This detailed timeline lists many key actions WHO has taken since it first detected reports of a cluster of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause on the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission website. WHO immediately activated its three-level (global, regional and country-level) Incident Management Support Team (IMST) and began assessment of the new coronavirus.

Through various communication lines, including social media sites and the International Health Regulations Event site, WHO began relaying important information to the public and member states. WHO issued technical guidelines for countries to prepare for, communicate about, and control the large-scale community transmission of the virus. It formed committees of experts, visited Wuhan to investigate, and helped organize eight virtual IHR meetings (as of 7 May). WHO carefully tracked the first cases reported in different countries and responded by acquiring and shipping protective gear and testing supplies where needed.
