The government of Japan recently contributed more than US$ 2.7 million to support the Pan American Health Organization’s response to COVID-19 in the Americas. PAHO, the specialized health agency in the Americas and the Regional Office of the World Health Organization, provides essential leadership to assist the 52 countries and territories of the Americas fight the pandemic. Japan’s financial assistance is dedicated to helping nine countries – namely Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela – identify and control outbreaks, slow the spread of the disease, and protect vulnerable populations. The project also aims to use money to provide reliable public health information and protective measures for those involved in the response. Available immediately, the funding will be used over a period of nine months to help augment national health systems in the beneficiary countries. Japan’s aid is a part of the US$ 94.8 million needed by the national healthcare systems in the Americas to combat the pandemic.
