WHO leads Timor-Leste’s immediate response to COVID-19

21 May 2020

Despite a fragile health care system and limited resources, the tiny island of Timor-Leste has successfully controlled the spread of COVID-19 with the help of WHO’s support. Even before the island’s first confirmed cases were reported, WHO offered immediate assistance by providing testing kits, PPE, technical support tailored to Timor-Leste’s needs, and training for health care workers in infection control and case management. WHO also provided scientific guidelines on designing isolation and quarantine facilities and surveillance systems. Of the few confirmed cases, they are almost all linked to well defined clusters in government quarantine facilities. The action plan developed jointly by the Ministry of Health and WHO is helping government and partners in estimating and addressing the funding gaps for COVID-19 response.
