WHO supports the Smithsonian Science Education Center’s new COVID-19 guide for youth

21 May 2020

Youth worldwide now have access to a free guide to help them understand the science and social science behind COVID-19 and take action to protect their health and the health of their families and communities. The Smithsonian Science Education Center, in collaboration with WHO and the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), has produced “COVID-19! How can I protect myself and others?”

This new rapid-response guide, based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, encourages youth (ages 8-17) to learn by doing. Participants engage in activities to answer questions to explore the impact of COVID-19 on the world, how to practice hand and respiratory hygiene and physical distancing, and how to research more information about COVID-19. Each task is designed to be completed at home.

The guide makes science exciting and approachable for children and youth all over the world and encourages them to learn by doing. The director of the Smithsonian Science Education Center expressed gratitude to the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation for their support in developing this module that integrates inquiry-based science education with social and emotional learning and civic engagement. IAP is a partnership of 140 national academies of science, engineering and medicine.
