WHO trains Tanzanian health workers in critical care skills

About 160 health workers in Tanzania attended a three-day virtual training session focused on caring for critically ill COVID-19 patients, organized by the Ministry of Health and WHO focusing on.

One attendee, Dr Abel Musa, a critical care specialist at a hospital in Zanzibar, described how the training (part of an ongoing series) boosted infection prevention and control (IPC) procedures at Tasakhtaa Global Hospital, where he works. He has since aligned hospital protocols to handle COVID-19 patients with nationally recommended practices, including screening patients on entry and creating a COVID-19-specific team to ensure other essential health services continue.

WHO is working with governments in Africa to train health workers and improve surveillance, testing, contact tracing and treatment. More than 7000 health workers have been trained in WHO African Region since the beginning of the pandemic, including over 400 in Tanzania. WHO is also providing technical expertise in countries, either remotely or by embedding experts in national response teams.
