WHO Office at the United Nations organized a high-level event at the United Nations on April 7 in observance of World Health Day 2017. The event sought to raise political awareness on mental health illnesses as barriers for sustainable development and peace, and to highlight depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide and as a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease.
The event was attended by over 150 participants from UN Missions and agencies, NGOs, Academia and Foundations. Participants heard from high-level speakers including the from the office of the president of the UN General Assembly, Ambassadors of Canada, Sri Lanka, Zambia, Belgium, as well as senior officials from the UN, IOM, Academia, NGOs and Foundations.
