The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Alliance, Philippines (FCAP) receives a World Health Organization World No Tobacco Day 2011 award today.
In its citation, WHO says FCAP has been at the forefront of policy advocacy and capacity building for tobacco control and has caused the ire of the tobacco industry by publicizing violations of the ban on advertising, promotion and sponsorship and for exposing conflict of interest among powerful politicians and legislators.
FCAP works directly with communities and local governments for a 100% ban on indoor smoking in cities and municipalities. It has spearheaded a coalition to establish a health promotion foundation funded through tobacco taxes.
More than 5 million people worldwide die each year from tobacco-related diseases – more than the total for HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.
WHO gives awards to individuals and organizations for their outstanding efforts in the fight against tobacco use to mark the annual celebration of World No Tobacco Day on 31 May.
