Contingency Fund for Emergencies – Fourth quarterly update and year in review 2024

Overview
In the last quarter of 2024, WHO released US$ 5.8 million from the CFE in response to flooding in West and Central Africa; to support conflict-affected people with medical supplies and services in Somalia and the Syrian Arab Republic; for the fight against the Marburg outbreak in Rwanda; in response to the cholera outbreak in South Sudan; and to support the investigation of an undiagnosed disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
France and Norway renewed their generous support to the CFE in the last quarter of the year, bringing total contributions in 2024 to US$ 22 million. WHO has already released US$ 9 million in 2025 in response to five emergencies, including to combat outbreaks of Marburg in Tanzania and Sudan virus disease in Uganda.
As of 28 February, the CFE balance is below US$ 23 million, a critical level. Maintaining a well-funded CFE is essential for WHO to continue its swift and effective response to global health emergencies, ensuring that outbreaks and crises are managed promptly to safeguard public health.
