WHO/BS/2022.2436: Proposed 2nd International Standard for Human Interleukin-6 (IL-6)

Overview

The WHO First International Standard (IS) for human Interleukin-6 (IL-6), 89/548, was established by the WHO Expert Committee on Biological Standardisation (ECBS) in October 1992. Consistent demand for this standard has led to stock depletion and the requirement of a replacement IS which was recognized by ECBS at its meeting in October 2021. We therefore developed a replacement candidate IL-6 standard, coded 21/308, and assessed its suitability in
comparison with the existing IS, 89/548, in bioassays and immunoassays in an international collaborative study carried out by 15 participants in 7 countries.
