Webinar

Promoting well-being of children and adolescents during the pandemic

Wednesday, 07 October 2020, 13:00 hrs(1ST)

Background

It is noticed from evolving epidemiological trends of the COVID-19 pandemic that the children and adolescents have been much less affected by this novel infection globally, with only 1-8% of cases being reported in this age group. The clinical outcomes are also better among this age group compared to older age groups.

However, serious repercussions have been observed on the health and well-being of children and adolescents because of the indirect effects of the pandemic. Because of the disease outbreak, restriction of mobility, closure of schools, lack of social gatherings and physical distancing, etc. the children and adolescents are experiencing a new wave of insecurity, stress, anxiety, and disruption of daily lives. This situation has led to changes in behaviour like increased screen time, restricted opportunities for outdoor activities, social isolation, etc. These factors are leading to serious short-term and long-term consequences on the health and wellbeing of the children and adolescents.

The eighth webinar in this series “Promoting the well-being of children and adolescents during the pandemic” was scheduled at 13:00 hrs (IST) on Wednesday, 7 October 2020. The webinar was focused on the health and wellbeing of children and adolescents during the pandemic including their physical and mental health. The role of engaging with adolescents and young people in these times was also discussed.

Objective

The objective of the webinar was to discuss the mental and psycho-social well-being of children and adolescents during the pandemic and promotion of healthy diet, physical activity, and also the role of engaging with adolescents and youth for their well-being.
