A Multi-Country Workshop to Support the Implementation of ICD-11

25-29 April 2023, Colombo, Sri Lanka

Overview

The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) has long been the basis for comparable statistics on causes of morbidity and mortality and the latest version ICD-11 was adopted by the WHA72 and came to effect on 1 January 2022. The latest version, ICD-11, was adopted by the 72nd World Health Assembly (WHA) and came into effect on 1 January 2022. With ICD-11 now fully digital, it is accessible globally to anyone with an internet connection.

To assist countries in adopting this new classification, WHO is finalizing a comprehensive suite of tools that span the entire data lifecycle—from data collection and diagnostic coding to selecting the underlying cause of death, validating data, conducting analyses, and disseminating results. These tools are designed to improve both the timeliness and quality of health data, enhancing the end-to-end process at the country level.

A multi-country workshop was organized to enhance understanding and facilitate the use of ICD-11's tooling infrastructure. Through hands-on training, member states were given the opportunity to integrate ICD-11 into their health systems, promoting uniformity in data collection, analysis, and reporting, while strengthening overall health information systems.
