Hospitals are integral to effective health systems and to achieving health-related Sustainable Development Goals. Hospitals and their workers serve communities as places where health services and care are received in times of greatest need. The COVID-19 pandemic put a significant strain on hospital workers who served tirelessly to meet demand. It highlighted many system and service gaps but also the extraordinary capacity and insights of people within health systems to care for each other.  Now is the opportunity to restructure and transform hospitals through new solutions that harness the creative potential of patients and staff for healing.

Despite the existence of many improvement tools, persistent challenges, both large and small, remain.  We need new perspectives and solutions to improve hospitals. Staff and patients understand the issues best and have a wealth of creative ideas. Context-appropriate, culturally sensitive solutions can be found when staff and patients come together. The process of engaging in innovation is an opportunity to strengthen relationships, bolster hope and, in so doing, strengthen the overall organizational culture and the ability of hospitals to meet their communities’ needs
