Five scenarios of using the Global Platform to monitor school health

Depends on the needs of a country, or school, the platform can be used to answer different questions in different scenarios of its use.

It will depend whether you are interested on the status of national and/or school health policies and resources in your country, district or school.

Why is the status of national school health policies and resources in my country?

To answer this question, the national level questionnaire will be answered by national school health and education authorities. This questionnaire does not collect school level data, therefore in this scenario only policy intention, not its implementation, will be known. This will provide a country with its score for Standard 1 “Government policies and resources” of the Global Standards for Health Promoting Schools that states “The whole of government is committed to and invests in making every school a health promoting school”.

What is the status of national school health policies and resources in my region?

To answer this question, the national level questionnaire will be answered by national school health and education authorities in all (or a subset) of countries of a geographical region (e.g. WHO Eastern Mediterranean region). This questionnaire does not collect school level data, therefore in this scenario only policy intention, not its implementation, will be known for the entire region (or a subset of countries). This will provide a region with its score for Standard 1 “Government policies and resources” of the Global Standards for Health Promoting Schools that states “The whole of government is committed to and invests in making every school a health promoting school”.

What is the status of national school health policies and resources, and their implementation in schools, in my country?

To answer this question, the national level questionnaire will be answered by national school health and education authorities, and the school level questionnaire will be answered by school coordinators from a representative sample of schools in your country based on the methodology of the global school health policies and practices survey (G-SHPSS). In this scenario, both policy intention and its implementation, will be known. This will provide a country with its score for all eight Global Standards for Health Promoting Schools.

What is the status of national school health policies and resources, and their implementation in my district?

To answer this question, the national level questionnaire will be answered by national school health and education authorities, and the school level questionnaire will be answered by school coordinators from a representative sample of schools in your district. This will provide the district with its score for all eight Global Standards for Health Promoting Schools. The score for Standard 1 will be based on national policies (given that in most countries school policies are decided at national rather than subnational level). In countries where school policies are decided at the subnational level, the national level questionnaire will be answered by subnational school health and education authorities.

Is my school a Health-Promoting School?

To answer this question, the school level questionnaire will be answered by school coordinators from your school. The school coordinator can invite other collaborators to answer the questionnaire (e.g. school nurse or other staff). This will provide the school with its score for standards 2-8 of the eight Global Standards for Health Promoting Schools. Standard 1 is about national policies and resources therefore the school level questionnaire does not collect data on it. However, the status of the national policies and resources for school health will affect the ability of individual schools to be health-promoting schools.
