Software and training

To analyse the STEPS surveillance data, WHO recommends and supports using Epi InfoTM as it is free, easy to use and can correctly perform analyses for complex sample designs. The software can be downloaded directly from the United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

WHO provides a STEPS-specific training on Epi Info using a simplified version of the STEPS Instrument which covers the basics of Epi Info. The materials for the training are provided below:

Note: The training materials and the STEPS analysis tools were designed for use with Epi Info version 3.5.x because it allows all analysis programs to be saved with the project (.mdb) file.

Analysis code

The Microsoft Access databases below contain the Epi Info analysis programs needed to complete the STEPS data book and fact sheet. Be sure to take the analysis programs for the STEPS Instrument version you have used.

Data presentation templates

There are a number of resources available to assist countries in presenting the results of their survey. The STEPS fact sheet presents a set of key indicators in a short, two-page document. The STEPS data book presents suggested tables of data for all survey items, which can serve as an integral part of the survey report. Instructions are available for each to instruct countries on how to use the provided analysis code to rapidly complete both of these reporting documents. A site report template and presentations from the STEPS data analysis workshop on the site report and data interpretation are also provided below.
